A site manager from Oxfordshire has been recognised for his proven dedication and making his mark as one of the best in the UK after winning a NHBC Pride in the Job Award.

Craig Hodge, who works for Deanfield Homes at its Deanfield Green development in East Hagbourne, Oxfordshire, is celebrating having received a Quality Award from the National House Building Council (NHBC) Pride in the Job Awards.

Running for 43 years, the accolade (awarded by the UK’s leading new homes warranty and insurance provider) is the most highly regarded in the house-building industry and a prestigious benchmark for exceptional site managers. With only 443 winners selected out of over 8,000 entrants across the UK, the recipients are among the country’s best house builders.

Commenting on the win, Deanfield Homes Manager Director Peter Blades said: “We are over the moon for Craig. This accolade is a prestigious benchmark for remarkable site managers across the UK and is very well deserved, it’s a testament to the consistent high standards and hard work that has been delivered by the entire team at Deanfield Green. Celebrating his success, Craig said: “I’m delighted to have won the NHBC Pride in the Job award. Judging for the awards is rigorous, with the current competition beginning in July last year. Each site manager is assessed across six key areas: consistency; attention to detail; leadership; interpretation of drawings and specifications; technical expertise; and health and safety. Thousands of site inspections and meticulous scoring and verifications have taken place to decide upon the winning site managers.

Commenting on the awards, Steve Wood, CEO at NHBC, said: “Congratulations to all the winners who should feel proud to have received a Pride in the Job Award. Pride in the Job is firmly at the heart of NHBC’s mission to raise standards in the housing industry. It is important we recognise the vital role site managers play in ensuring new homes are delivered on time, on safe sites and to exacting construction quality standards. This accolade recognises the best site managers across the UK and celebrates how much Craig has inspired his team by going the extra mile to deliver homes of the highest quality.”

The flagship competition has three categories for different sized businesses: small; medium; and large house builders; a multi-storey category where site managers are working on projects up to seven storeys for multiple occupancy; and finally the high-rise category for multiple occupancy projects over seven storeys.

The Quality Award winners will now go on to compete for Seal of Excellence and Regional Awards in the autumn, with the national Supreme Award winners unveiled in January 2024.

Pupils from Hagbourne C of E Primary School have been given the opportunity to get their hands dirty and enjoy outdoor play with a difference, thanks to the donation of a mud kitchen from regional housebuilder Deanfield Homes.

The pupils, aged between four and seven, have been getting creative and developing their very own mud recipes to help aid their development and connect with the great outdoors. The complete life-like kitchen fits perfectly into the primary school’s outdoor play area and offers children the chance to experiment using a combination of mud, water and sand.

The kitchen has been made by local social enterprise RAW, using leftover wood that has been collected from construction sites across the Oxfordshire area such as the Deanfield Green development in East Hagbourne.

RAW is an Oxford-based social enterprise that helps businesses to create life-changing social and environment impact through its waste wood recycling service and by making high quality, sustainable furniture. Supporting those who have faced previous challenges in life, RAW also provides employment, skills and training, with 75% of its workforce having fought, and won, against issues such as addiction, criminality, poor mental health and homelessness.

For every order received, the money is invested back into RAW to employ and train more adults and young people in the community. The donation of the mud kitchen from Deanfield Homes generated six social impact hours which will be used to provide further employment and training.

Get to Know Your New Home

You’ve secured your dream home and now it’s time to get ready for the big move. When moving into a new-build home a new home demonstration will be arranged which will give you the opportunity to walk through your home to ensure you understand how everything works and provide useful information about maintenance.

 

Plan Your Move

Once you’ve confirmed your move-in date, get comparative quotes from removal companies and remember to book this well in advance. If you’re packing yourself, start early and tackle one room at a time. Dismantling large furniture can be time consuming so it’s worth starting that well ahead in the weeks leading up to moving day.

 

Inform Others

With a new home comes a new address, so it’s a good idea to start making a list of the friends, companies and utility suppliers you’ll need to notify of this change. It’s worth putting in place a postal redirection service for the first couple of months in case anything has slipped through the net. Don’t forget to take final meter readings so you don’t end up paying for more than you’ve used.

 

Prepare for Moving Day

  1. What does buying off-plan mean?

Buying a home off-plan simply means purchasing the house before it has been built or completed, sometimes before construction has even started. You’ll be able to view brochures and plans and ask questions about your potential new home. In return for a relatively small deposit, you can secure a brand-new home and often get a say in the interior finishes.

 

  1. Can I choose my preferred plot location?

Absolutely, by reserving your home early, subject to availability, you have the freedom to choose your preferred position within the development. From your ideal layout and garden size to the best views, getting in early means you can pick the property that is perfect for you.  When buying off-plan you are in the rare position of being able to view the key milestones as your new home comes to life.

With intent to build further on the community bond in Stanton Harcourt, Deanfield Homes values giving back to the communities and continues to strengthen relationships in the locations where they build.

RAW is an Oxford-based social enterprise that delivers sustainable site recycling services and transforms wood waste into furniture and products for local communities. The picnic bench donated to Stanton Harcourt C of E Primary School was made from leftover recycled wood that RAW collects across various sites within the Oxfordshire area, creating a sustainable solution of the wood for the school to enjoy, with nothing left over going to waste.
