Celebrating Marvellous Oyetomi: a year of growth and learning at Deanfield Homes

July 31, 2025In News3 Minutes

As part of her Quantity Surveying course at Oxford Brookes University, Marvellous Oyetomi joined Deanfield Homes as a Commercial Assistant in July 2024. What started as a one-year internship has turned into an extended placement, thanks to Marvellous’s dedication, enthusiasm and the invaluable experience she’s gained.

Over the past year, Marvellous has been given the opportunity to shadow various teams across the business, including the Quantity Surveying team, Commercial Director Alex Yardy and procurement team. She has embraced every aspect of her role, relishing the chance to move away from the theoretical side of university and immerse herself in the practical side of the industry.

Marvellous said: “I’ve really enjoyed every part of my internship. I’ve had the chance to learn not just about Quantity Surveying, but also other areas of the business, which has given me a much broader perspective on how everything fits together in a construction project”.

The role, which was advertised through her student forum, has provided her with hands-on experience in a range of key areas and has involved a mix of managing subcontractors and suppliers, cost analysis, estimating, raising orders and product sourcing.

Marvellous’s experience is set apart by the breadth of exposure she’s had, unlike some peers who focus on more specialised roles. She’s been able to see projects from start to finish, offering her a complete understanding of how every department contributes to a successful build.

Marvellous continues: “I’ve learned so much about time management, prioritisation and working with different teams. It’s been so rewarding to see how each department works together to bring a project to life”.

Her role has also involved regular site visits, enhancing her technical skills and confidence in the field. Her improved computer skills, particularly in Excel, have been another key takeaway, equipping her with the tools she needs for her future career.

Marvellous’s personal and professional growth has been truly remarkable. She’s not only enhanced her technical expertise but also developed skills that will serve her well in her final year at university and beyond.

“The experience has definitely made me feel more prepared to tackle my final year. It’s been amazing to see the link between theory and practice and I feel so much more confident in my skills and knowledge”.

Production Director Liam Gilbert comments: “We’ve been proud to have Marvellous as part of the Deanfield Homes team and we’re excited to see all she accomplishes in her final year and beyond. Her internship is a perfect example of how hands-on experience can enrich a student’s learning and prepare them for a successful career in the construction industry”.

We wish Marvellous all the best in her studies and future career and we’re confident she’s ready to make an impact in the world of Quantity Surveying and beyond!
