The draw of a grandchild led us to our new home
August 2021: Jennifer and Simon Nicholls had lived in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire for 20 years and after their daughter and her husband moved to Witney in Oxfordshire they felt like it was time to return to Newcastle, where they were originally from and spend some time there.
Although they enjoyed being back in Newcastle, after discovering that their first grandchild was on the way, this made them suddenly realise that spending their retirement closer to family was what they really wanted to do.
Jennifer explains,
“When our daughter announced that she was pregnant and would love us to live closer to them, the draw of our future grandchild was just too much. We didn’t want to spend time away from them and be unable to build a relationship, so we decided to start looking for a home closer to their location in Witney.
“Moving into rented accommodation short term seemed like a good option as it gave us time to look around and explore the area, so we moved into a vicarage in Stanton St John on a six month let with a view to extend.
“We saw details of the show home launch at Deanfield Homes’ development in Shipton-under-Wychwood and decided to have a look as we hadn’t really considered a new build before. We were really impressed and liked the traditional look of the homes, together with the quality finish but we already had our eye on a renovation property. As the homes at Deanfield Grange weren’t going to be ready for quite a while and we had always bought second-hand homes, coupled with the draw of a project we put an offer in.
“I did keep thinking about the homes and village location at Deanfield Grange and was really impressed, but we were keen to move out of our rented accommodation as a new vicar was arriving in the village. Then suddenly the Covid-19 pandemic hit, and this led to the sale of the renovation project falling through.
“I mentioned to Simon that perhaps we should revisit Deanfield Grange and got in touch only to discover they had all been reserved. It wasn’t meant to be. Then a few weeks later we received a phone call from Savills the selling agent to say one of the properties had fallen through and would we be interested? Well, we jumped at the chance and knew straight away that the position of plot on the development was perfect for us.”
Jennifer and Simon purchased a four bedroom detached home at Deanfield Grange.
Jennifer continues, “when we first visited Deanfield Grange we knew there was something different about these homes. The location was great, in the heart of the village, and the homes were really pretty, built with traditional Cotswold style stone and laid out really well throughout the development, taking advantage of different aspects and angles. Overlooking mature trees and having a wild flower meadow included in the landscaping is fabulous!
“We were able to add a few personal touches to the home as it was being built and the after care and customer service has been second to none. I would definitely recommend Deanfield Homes”.
“It has been quite a journey for us and an upheaval having one plan and then changing it, but we have no regrets and are now able to see our grandchild regularly and know we have found the perfect home for our retirement.”
